Walking around the coastal area near Harlech
Introduction-
The area around Harlech is superb for walkers, whether for gentle ambles or for seriously hard days on rugged mountains. The itinerary below is designed for those of average walking ability who want to see more of the area than they would by car and to act as an introduction to the area. 36 Glan Gors, in lower Harlech is an ideal place to stay as all the facilities of the small historic town of Harlech are within easy reach providing those without their own transport perfect access to the railway station and buses. Harlech is a quiet location with one of the best beaches in Britain from which there are stunning views of Snowdonia.

Friday evening
For a special meal we recommend a trip to Y Branwen, just five minutes’ walk away along the road. It should be mentioned that this is a popular dining venue so booking is usually necessary. There are several quality restaurants and cages in upper Harlech and for those who prefer just to relax indoors after the journey there are some takeaways and cafes in the town centre. Depending on the time of year you visit and if the weather is kind to you, then a walk on the beach to catch the sunset is a must. West coast sunsets are something special and not to be missed. A walk down the beach road, or for the more adventurous across the dunes, will bring you to the wide and wonderful sandy beach.

Saturday
A trip to the shops for food may be on the agenda on Saturday morning. Harlech main street is from another era so your sure to see some interesting buildings. One which you’re sure not to miss is the castle which dominates the town, with it’s impressive structure and historic stories its well worth a visit. A key feature of the castle is its spectacular view, here you will be able to see a 360 degree view of the beach, dunes and mountains from its battlements.
After lunch, take the train to Dyffryn about eight miles away and walk back on the tracks and back roads. The route takes you past the railway station and almost onto Dyffryn beach and the path behind the dunes. This brings you to the road from Llanbedr to Shell Island, at this point head into the village of Llambedr. Depending on the time of day you may wish to have a meal or drink here, The Victoria or the Hen Feudy restaurant are good options. From here head inland through the woods towards Cwm Bychan. After a couple of miles take a left at the T junction signed for Harlech. Follow the road and you will eventually come downhill past the castle into lower Harlech and 36 Glan Gors, where you will be greeted by stunning views.

Saturday evening
It’s probably a nice hot shower and feet up time after the day’s events, but you could always see another sunset if you’re lucky, dine out or visit Theatre Harlech, just up the road from Glan Gors. There are a variety of entertainments here, including films, plays and music recitals. Talking about recitals, if you’re really lucky and the weather is good, you may be able to hear one of Glan Gors nearby neighbours playing his harp and composing music.
Sunday Morning and early afternoon
We would recommend that if you haven’t already been for a walk on the beach, then you do so before yo leave. One good way to see Harlech beach and the views it offers is to walk along it to the headland. Go back up to the main road via the steps, cross the main road and then turn left where the two minor roads cross. This small road runs parallel to the beach but is a lot higher than the beach providing magnificent views of the beach and the mountains of Snowdonia. The local council have obligingly put benches at several places along the road, so on a good day you can spend hours just looking into the distance. If you follow the road down back onto the main street you will once again arrive back in lower Harlech. These routes are onlys suggestions, so feel free to create your own walks around the Harlech area as there are many combinations of beach, paths and byways.
