Cottage bed & breakfast, Wales
Beautiful scenery with outdoor leisure on the menu
Introduction
Mid Wales contains some gem landscapes indeed, from the popular Brecon Beacons National Park to the remote but just as stunning Cambrian Mountains. Move to the coast on Cardigans Bay and discover the seaside hub and university town of Aberystwyth with its Victorian cliff railway and two glorious beaches.
Brecon Beacons
For the purpose of this itinerary we will be focussing on the historic towns of the beautiful Welsh Borders. Newton and Welshpool are popular spots with Newton being the birthplace of pioneer co-operator Robert Owen and Welshpool popular for its narrow gauge railway and canals.
The Welsh Borders, Mid Wales is prime walking and outdoor leisure territory, with everything from climbing to horse riding on the menu.
Accommodation
You will be able to select from a range of beautiful cottages, bed and breakfast, guesthouses and hotels in Mid Wales, however two that stand out for me are the Forest Keep in Kerry near Newtown and Rhandregynwen Hall bed and breakfast in Llanymynech.
Forest Keep Cottage in Kerry is a stunning Edwardian cottage sleeping up to five people. This lovely property was originally the old coach house and has been renovated to offer guests charming, well-equipped accommodation. With its own, unique bell tower and wooden beams, the property retains much of its original character. There is also a warming wood-burning stove in the cosy sitting room providing the perfect atmosphere for a relaxing weekend or mid-week break away.
Rhandregynwen Hall luxury Bed and Breakfast in Wales is set in picturesque countryside, just 8 miles north of Welshpool, just off the A483. This pre-Georgian property resides over 40 acres of pasture land and has recently been restored and renovated to the highest standard, whilst retaining many original features. If you love the outdoors then Rhandregynwen Hall is the perfect option for you with canoeing, walking, riding and fishing activities right on your doorstep.

The above accommodations are only a guide and you will find a selection of accommodation in Wales on the iknow-wales web-site.
Friday evening
Settle down and unwind in Revells restaurant for a good combination of local delicacies, relaxed atmosphere and an imaginative programme of musical events. The menu is mouth-watering offering a mixture of light specialist dishes such as goats cheese on French toast all the way to the larger dishes with a personal touch. Here you will find dishes such as char grilled swordfish, Welsh black beef steak and creative pasta dishes offering a little sample of Italy tucked away in Mid Wales.
If this doesn’t seem like the right place for you, then select from a range of Pubs, bars and restaurants in the nearby towns of Mid Wales, where you can sit back, relax and plan the events of the days ahead.
Saturday
After a good night’s sleep, freshen up and get ready for an action packed day of outdoor events. That being said it might be a good idea to head into one of the nearby towns to have a energising breakfast or a mug of coffee to wake you up for the day’s festivities. There are numerous coffee shops around so you won’t be short of options, however for breakfast or early lunch head to the Castle Kitchen where you will be able to browse from a selection of homemade products.
Once watered and fed, set off to the Montgomery canal for a afternoon of canoeing. Why not hire a Canadian canoe and enjoy a leisurely cruise down the 35 mile canal. There are very few motorised boats on the canal which mean you can enjoy the unspoilt beauty of your surroundings with very little disruption, it’s just you the cows, herons and moorhens. There are a few locks which will need to be tackled but if you’re with a local canoe hire company you will most likely be in a group with experts assisting you.
After a day’s canoeing your probably ready for a relaxing evening, so head back to the your accommodation for a lie down, then jump in the shower and get dressed for a fine candlelit dining.
Saturday Evening
The Castle Kitchen provides the perfect setting for an intimate dining experience with candlelit tables and a relaxing atmosphere.
If you’re looking for something a little different and unique, take the trip to Llanfylin and find a restaurant called Seeds. Seeds is a delightful cottage style restaurant known for its relaxed atmosphere and speciality dishes. Although the kitchen is small the cuisines is delectable and if you’re lucky enough you may just get to experience dishes such as home-potted shrimp, Welsh rack of lamb and chocolate and rum mousse.
Depending on how your feeling either stay for a few drinks, head to a local pub or back to your accommodation to get your feet up.
Sunday
Treat yourself to a lie in which depending on what time you arrived back at your accommodation last night will either be before or after twelve. Head to one of the local cafes in Welshpool or Newtown and be on the lookout for homemade local soups. Whilst devouring your late breakfast or early lunch plan the day ahead. As your’e close to Mother Nature why not head to the hills for a gentle stroll or if you don’t feel like walking, why not saddle up and go riding.
If you ask locally you will be able to select from a number of scenic rides and cross country treks in Mid Wales. The natural landscape provides the perfect terrain to enjoy riding trails including mountains, rivers, pretty villages and plenty of wildlife. Whether you’re a beginner or an accomplished rider, you’re sure to enjoy the experience.
